DAVID
What?

MAX
Yo Dave, it’s Max Carter

DAVID
What’s up?

MAX
Nothing much, I just got an offer for you if you’re down for a challenge?

DAVID
What kind of Challenge?
MAX
Well my homeboy Mike wants to challenge you to a street fight with $40k up for grabs.

DAVID
Keep talking.

MAX
This Friday night, 7:30 at Hampton Park Square, one on one, David Tua vs. My main man Mike Miles. What do you say?

DAVID
It’s on.

MAX
Ok big fella; don’t get too excited because there’s a twist.
If you take a fall in the 2nd round, I will split the prize money half each way, and everybody will be winners

DAVID
Hell NO

MAX
You don’t have to give me an immediate answer
Think about Shane, I’m sure the money can help set him up for a great education at University.

Disgusted, David hangs up the phone and drinks his beer.

MAX
Then it’s settled.
Just make sure you’re at HP Square by 7pm

Don’t forget…2nd round…Understood?

Struggling with his conscience, David agrees to go on with the fixed fight, by nodding, knowing he can get severely injured and result into possible death due to his health condition.
(15 secs)

9. EXT. HP SQUARE (CAGED PLATFORM) NIGHT

The fight is underway and David cops a few heavy knocks in the head, but stands his ground. Halfway through the round, David surprisingly spots his son in the crowd cheering him on. Dave is caught off guard and gets pummelled around only to be saved by the bell. Dave can hardly stand on his own 2 feet as he uses the ropes to hold himself up. Shane makes his way through the crowd to get closer to his father, and pleads him to throw in the towel. Suffering under pressure, David tells his son about the fix.

SHANE
(Worried) Dad you got to stop…You can’t go on

DAVID
Son, I have to do this

SHANE
Why? Does money mean that much to you that you’re willing to put your own life on the line?

DAVID
Don’t worry son, I just have to walk out this last round. This fight has been fixed, and the only reason I accepted was to use the money being offered to save up for your education. I don’t want you to live the life I did, it’s too hard.

After hearing this, Shane gets emotional and tightly grips his father’s fingers through the cage.

SHANE
You can do it…

Bell rings for the 2nd round and out come both opponents. Tua is ready to take the fall as Max gives him the nod. However, David sees an opening and catches Mike with an uppercut. Body combinations are thrown and Tua ends the fight with a big left hook.
Game over, David Wins, Shane is happy, Mike is down and Max is speechless.
Camera fades to credits while victorious music is played.

The Interview

This short film, used as an exercise of dialogue was created by several of classmates from Chisholm institute of TAFE, Frankston. This exercise explores the use of camera cuts (close ups, wide shots and normal shots) to demonstrate the mood of the story. Using our “Interview” scene as an example, the wide shots are used to describe the setting, whilst the extreme close ups reflect on the mood of the story. As the conversation progresses, close ups are used to show the seriousness between the boss and the job applicant.
